Increasing reading proficiency rates is a top priority of INSERT DISTRICT NAME. Research clearly shows the impact it has on future academic, career, and life success yet only 30% of Florida’s third-grade students are proficient according to the Spring Florida Standards Assessment. In order to realize this goal, we must ensure that our teachers are fully equipped to effectively teach all students how to read. The state has already recognized the critical importance of implementing evidence-based strategies: a Reading Endorsement or Certification is now required by the state of Florida for teachers who are providing intensive reading interventions, which is a majority of K-3 teachers in the state.
I am writing to request that you, as our local representative, support your community by funding teacher access to the Literacy Matrix, a research-based online professional development system proven to improve teacher knowledge and skills, and most importantly, student reading proficiency. Developed by leading experts at the University of Florida, in partnership with the James Patterson Family Foundation and Helios Education Foundation, the Literacy Matrix offers teachers with a flexible solution to building these critical skills while also completing requirements for the Reading Endorsement. This year, the Literacy Matrix is accessible by select districts, but in order to effect true change in Florida’s reading proficiency rates, teachers in all school districts who work with young teachers need to understand the science of reading instruction and learn how to implement strategies that are most impactful. This year’s state funding will allow expansion of the Literacy Matrix to all school districts.
