The Literacy Matrix helps teachers develop the specialized skills and knowledge needed to deliver effective reading instruction.

Our online professional learning system is based on the science of reading and prepares teachers to: 

  • effectively teach reading
  • diagnose reading issues
  • intervene appropriately using research-based strategies

Participants demonstrate evidence of their learning and receive personalized feedback from expert literacy navigators.

    The Literacy Matrix is available for free to:

    • K-12 educators and coaches in Florida as a pathway to the Reading Endorsement
    • Participation may be contingent upon district approval. Download the pre-enrollment flyer for more information.

    Participants will have the opportunity to participate in either a full-length or fast-track pathway for the Literacy Matrix.
    Please refer to the Literacy Matrix Pathway Visualization Examples for a side-by-side timeline for a learner who starts in term 3B in either the full-length or fast-track pathway. 

    Delivery and Duration

    Participants can earn up to 300 hours of professional learning based on their competency needs. Each competency is time-bound and seven weeks in length (six weeks in summer term). 

    • Competency 1: Literacy Micro-Credential (Elementary or Secondary) (60 hours)
    • Competency 2: Application of Evidence-Based Instructional Practices (60 hours)
    • Competency 3: Foundations and Application of Assessment (60 hours)
    • Competency 4: Foundations and Application of Differentiated Instruction (60 hours)
    • Competency 5: Demonstration of Accomplishment (60 hours)

    Stipend Eligibility

    Literacy Matrix Competency 1

    Starting January 9, 2024, Competency 1 of the Literacy Matrix will be replaced with the Elementary and Secondary Literacy Micro-Credentials. Upon successful completion of the Elementary or Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential (Literacy Matrix Competency 1) on or after July 1, 2023, may be eligible to apply for either a $1,000 or $2,000 completion stipend.

    $1,000 completion stipend (Elementary or Secondary Micro-Credential)
    Completions on or after July 1, 2023: K-12 instructional personnel as defined in 1012.01(2) employed at a Local Educational Agency (LEA) public school or publicly funded charter school. Please note that only learners who began and completed Literacy Matrix Competency 1 after July 1, 2023, will also earn the Elementary Literacy Micro-Credential and may be eligible for a $1,000 completion stipend based on their instructional role.

    • Classroom teachers
    • Student personnel services staff members
    • Librarians/media specialists
    • Education paraprofessionals
    • Other instructional staff

    $2,000 completion stipend (Elementary Micro-Credential)

    • Completions on or before June 30, 2023: prekindergarten instructional personnel as defined in 1002.55, 1002.61, 1002.63 and childcare personnel as defined in 402.302(3) and 1002.88(1)(e) who work at School Readiness (SR) and/or VPK contracted provider.
    • Completions on or after July 1, 2023: Prekindergarten instructional personnel as defined in 1002.55, 1002.61, 1002.63 and child care personnel as defined in 402.302(3) and 1002.88(1)(e) who work at childcare facilities licensed under 402.305, family child care homes licensed under 402.313, large family child care homes licensed under 402.3131, public or non public schools exempt from licensure under 402.3025, faith-based child care providers exempt under 402.316, before or after school program described in 402.305, or a child development program that is accredited by a national accrediting body and operates on a military installation that is certified by the United States Department of Defense.
    Literacy Matrix Competencies 2-5

    $2,000 completion stipend (Reading Endorsement)

    • Be an Instructional Personnel as defined in s. 1012.01(2), F.S., Public LEA, including Public Charters.
    • Begin Competencies 2-5 with UF Lastinger Center for Learning on or after July 1, 2023, and complete by June 16, 2024, and
    • Be employed at a Local Educational Agency (LEA) public school or publicly funded charter school.

    Only valid Florida Department of Education (FDOE) Professional Certificate (EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION) holders are eligible to apply for the Reading Endorsement and receive a stipend. If you do not hold a FDOE EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION, you are not eligible for this stipend. 

    Upon successful completion of the Literacy Matrix or Competency 1 of the Literacy Matrix, our Stipends Processing Team will reach out with next steps to complete the stipend application.

    Educators can also register for the Literacy Matrix through self-pay, including but not limited to:

    • Any non-Florida public school educator
    • Any private charter school, private school, or homeschool educator 
    • Any Florida public school educator who is not able to register due to lack of seats
